Best Cashback Apps 2026: How Cash Back Sites Work and Which to Use

A cashback app is not a coupon. When you click through it to a store, the store pays the app a commission for sending a customer — the same money it would otherwise spend on ads — and the app passes part of that commission back to you. You pay the normal price; a few weeks later, a percentage comes back.

That is also why cash back is slow and sometimes disappears: it only exists once the store confirms the order and the return window closes. Below is how it works step by step, the five apps worth having in the US, and what to do about Black Friday, when the rates go up and the mistakes get expensive.

How does Rakuten (and every other cashback site) work?

You go through the cashback app, pay the store as usual, the store pays the app a commission — and part of it comes back to you.
  1. You start at the app, not the store. Open the store through the app, its browser extension or its link — that click is what tells the store who sent you.
  2. You shop as usual. Same prices, same checkout, same delivery.
  3. The store reports the sale. Within a day or two the purchase shows up as "pending" in your account.
  4. The return window passes. If you send the item back, the cash back is cancelled — the store gets its commission back too.
  5. The cash back is confirmed and paid out on the app's schedule: some pay on request, Rakuten pays every three months.

The five worth having

Cashback apps come in three kinds, and the "best" one depends on which kind matches how you spend: shopping portals for online orders, price-tracking extensions that also pay rewards, and grocery apps for the weekly shop.

Rakuten — the best-known portal, founded in 1998 as Ebates. It pays every three months — on 15 February, May, August and November — once your confirmed balance is over $5, by PayPal, check or American Express Membership Rewards points. The schedule is its one real drawback: cash back from a November order arrives months later.

TopCashback — the same idea since 2005, and often a higher rate at the same store. If you only use one portal, compare the two for any purchase over $100: a percentage point on a TV is real money.

Capital One Shopping — a free extension that compares prices and tries coupon codes at checkout, and pays rewards as credits. The catch: credits turn only into gift cards, never cash, and take 30–90 days to land.

Ibotta — the grocery one. Link your store loyalty card, add offers in the app, and cash back posts automatically when you shop; you need a $20 balance before you can withdraw.

LetyShops — a portal with separate US and UK storefronts and 3,200+ stores, strong on Temu, SHEIN and AliExpress-type marketplaces. It pays to PayPal or a bank with no fee, and look for the red fire icon: "hot cashback" boosts go up to 40 %. Sign up through our link and you get $3 (or £3 in the UK) once you spend $15 with cash back in your first month.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday: when cash back matters most

Black Friday falls on 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday on 30 November. Cashback sites raise rates at many stores that week — sometimes double the usual — and the rates change by the day, so check the store page on the day you buy, not the week before.

Big-ticket orders are where it pays off: 5 % on a $600 console is $30, more than most coupon codes. If you are buying tech, our tech gift guide has prices checked this month; for AliExpress, 11.11 comes two weeks earlier.

Stack, don't swap: cash back from the app and rewards from your credit card come from different places, so you get both. Coupon codes are the exception — use only the ones the cashback app lists, or the store may refuse the commission.

Six reasons cash back goes missing

  • An ad blocker stopped the tracking click. Pause it on the store, or use the app's extension, which warns you.
  • Another link came after yours — a price comparison site, a coupon extension, an Instagram link. The last click wins the commission.
  • A coupon code from somewhere else. Codes not listed by the cashback app often void the reward.
  • You returned or swapped the item. Even a partial return reduces or cancels it.
  • The cart was paid with store credit or a gift card — many stores pay no commission on those.
  • You switched devices between the click and the payment. Finish the order where you started.

Keep the order confirmation email until the cash back is confirmed. Every app has a "missing cash back" form, and the order number is the first thing it asks for.

How to pick one

Look at the stores you actually use, not the headline rate: a 10 % rate at a store you never visit is worth nothing. Then at the payout: if you want cash, Capital One Shopping's gift cards won't do; if you want money before the holidays, Rakuten's quarterly schedule won't either. Most people end up with one portal plus Ibotta for groceries — two apps, no overlap.

Plan the purchase before the sale

The cheapest way to use Black Friday is to know what you're buying before it starts. Put the things you want in a wishlist, check them against the cashback rates on the day, and send the same list to anyone asking what to get you — they can reserve a gift without you seeing who took it.

Frequently asked questions

How does Rakuten work?

You open a store through Rakuten, buy as usual, and the store pays Rakuten a commission for the referral. Rakuten shares part of it with you as cash back, which shows as pending, gets confirmed after the return window, and is paid every three months — 15 February, May, August and November — once it is over $5.

Is Rakuten legit?

Yes. It has paid cash back since 1998, when it launched as Ebates, and the money comes from stores' affiliate commissions, not from you. The common complaints are about timing — quarterly payouts — and untracked purchases, which usually come down to ad blockers or another link clicked later.

What is the best cashback app?

The one that covers the stores you use and pays the way you want. For online shopping, Rakuten or TopCashback; for groceries, Ibotta; for price checks plus rewards, Capital One Shopping, as long as gift cards suit you.

Can I use cash back and a credit card's rewards together?

Yes. The cashback app is paid by the store, the card rewards by the card issuer, so they stack. The only thing that tends to cancel cash back is a coupon code the app didn't list.

How long does cash back take?

It shows as pending within a few days, then waits for the store's return window — usually several weeks. After that it depends on the app: some pay on request, Rakuten pays quarterly.
