WhiteElephantsteal that gift!
Run a White Elephant gift exchange online: no pairs to draw, one wrapped gift each, and a random pick order that decides who chooses — and who gets robbed — first. Free, no email, works from any phone at the table.
What is a White Elephant gift exchange?
White Elephant is the gift exchange where nobody buys for a specific person. Everyone brings one wrapped gift, all the gifts go on one table, and players take turns either opening something new or stealing a gift somebody already unwrapped. You may also know it as Yankee Swap, Dirty Santa, thieving Secret Santa or, in Spanish, elefante blanco.
The name comes from the story of the kings of Siam, who gave sacred white elephants — ruinously expensive to keep and useless for work — to courtiers they wanted to bankrupt. Hence a gift that is really a problem, which is half the joke of the game.
It works best in big, loosely connected groups: office parties, Discord meetups, family reunions with in-laws. Since nobody buys for a named person, guests who barely know each other can still bring something that lands.
White Elephant rules, in order
Read these out loud before the first gift is opened — especially rule 7.
- 1Everyone brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget. No name on it, no recipient in mind.
- 2All gifts go on one table. Pick numbers are handed out at random — that is the whole draw.
- 3Number 1 chooses a gift and opens it in front of everyone.
- 4Number 2 either opens a new gift from the table or steals number 1's gift. Whoever loses a gift picks again from the table.
- 5Every following turn works the same way: open something new, or steal from anyone who has already unwrapped.
- 6A gift cannot be stolen back on the same turn — the person who just lost it has to choose something else first.
- 7After three steals a gift is frozen: it stays with its current owner and leaves the game.
- 8At the very end, number 1 — the only player who never got to steal — may swap their gift for any gift still in play.
The three-steal limit is the rule that ends the game, and the one people forget. Announce it at the start, not in round six when the same waffle maker has had five owners.
What this page actually does for you
The pick order is the only part worth automating — so that is the part we automate.
- A random, unriggable pick order instead of numbers torn out of a notebook
- Everyone opens their own number on their own phone
- The full order stays on screen, so nobody argues about whose turn it is
- The budget and the rules sit next to the numbers

What gift to bring
Works
Something consumable and good — decent chocolate, real coffee, a serious hot sauce — a small board game, a useful desk object, or something absurd but genuinely funny.
Works surprisingly well
The expensive-but-silly gift. A wireless charger shaped like something ridiculous gets stolen three times; a plain mug gets stolen never.
Does not work
Anything with a size, anything scented, anything that needs you to know the person. You have no idea who ends up with it.
Morally banned
Emptying your cupboard. White Elephant is not a junk swap — one lazy gift drags the whole table down and everybody notices.
How to run it online
Four steps, about a minute of setup.
Create the game
Name it, set the gift budget, pick the White Elephant mode. You get an organizer password.

White Elephant FAQ
How many times can a gift be stolen in White Elephant?
Three steals is the standard limit — after that the gift is frozen with its current owner and leaves the game. A gift also cannot be stolen back on the same turn, which stops steal loops.
What happens to player number 1?
Because they chose first and nobody could steal from them at the time, at the end of the round they may swap their gift for any gift still in play. That is the compensation for opening blind.
How many people do you need for White Elephant?
It starts being fun at six and works well up to about twenty. With fewer than six there are too few gifts on the table for stealing to matter.
What is the difference between White Elephant and Secret Santa?
In Secret Santa each person buys for one specific person they drew. In White Elephant nobody has a recipient: everyone brings one generic gift and the gifts are handed out by picking and stealing in turn order.
Is White Elephant the same as Yankee Swap or Dirty Santa?
Same game, different regional names. Yankee Swap is common in New England, Dirty Santa in the American South, elefante blanco in Spanish-speaking countries. The steal mechanic is identical; house rules on steal limits vary.
Can you play White Elephant over a video call?
Yes, with one adjustment: gifts have to be digital or shipped in advance. Use the pick order the same way and let each player unbox or describe their gift on camera when their turn comes.
