Boo Basket Ideas: What to Put In, Who to Boo, and a Free Printable

A boo basket is the best kind of October surprise: a small basket of treats left on someone's doorstep, with no name on it and a note telling them they have been "booed". The rules are simple — they get the basket, they put a sign on their door so nobody boos them twice, and they boo two more people.

It works because it is cheap, anonymous and spreads on its own. Below: what to put in one at under $20, ideas by who you are booing, a free printable with the note and the door sign, and how to run it at the office so nobody is the one left out.

How "you've been booed" works

  1. Put a small basket together — a few treats and a couple of seasonal things. Under $20 is the norm.
  2. Add the note: you've been booed, here's what to do next.
  3. Leave it on their doorstep and vanish. The traditional move is to knock or ring and run. The anonymity is the whole point.
  4. They hang the door sign so the next person knows the house is already booed.
  5. They boo two more people within a day or two, and the chain spreads through the street, the school or the office.

Everything you need for steps 2 and 4 is on one page: our free "You've been booed" printable has the note for the basket and the door sign, cut apart along the line.

What to put in a boo basket (under $20)

A good boo basket is mostly treats, plus one or two things that make it feel like a gift rather than a candy drop. A simple formula:

  • Something sweet — a Halloween candy mix, caramel apples, or pumpkin-shaped cookies.
  • Something cosy — hot cocoa packets, apple cider mix, a fall-scented candle if you know the household.
  • Something orange and silly — Halloween socks, a small plush ghost, glow sticks.
  • Something to do — a pumpkin carving kit, a Halloween colouring book, a spooky movie night snack.
  • The container — a plastic pumpkin bucket or a small basket, which becomes part of the gift.

If the basket is for a family you don't know well, keep it to wrapped, store-bought treats. Homemade food is lovely between friends and a worry for parents managing allergies.

Keep it under $20. The anonymity is what makes it fun; a big spend makes people wonder who is trying to impress them.

The free "You've been booed" printable

Download the printable — one page, US Letter, prints fine on A4. The top half is the note that goes in the basket and explains the rules; the bottom half is the sign the booed household puts on its door. Cut along the line.

Print a few at a time: everyone you boo needs two more for the people they pass it on to, and the chain stops the moment someone runs out of notes.

Running a boo at the office or in a group

In a street, a boo chain spreads on its own and it doesn't matter much who it misses. At work it does: the person who never gets booed notices, and "everybody boos whoever they like" always leaves someone out.

The fix is to stop leaving it to chance. Draw names first, so everyone is assigned exactly one person to boo and everyone gets booed once — the same mechanic as Secret Santa, with pumpkins. Set up the draw with a $10–15 budget, share one link, and each person privately sees only who they are booing. Deliveries can happen any day in October, on whatever schedule people like.

Boo baskets are the easiest autumn team activity there is: no party, no scheduling, no budget conversation beyond one number. Our autumn holidays calendar has the other low-effort dates for the season.

Frequently asked questions

What is a boo basket?

A small basket of Halloween treats left anonymously on someone's doorstep in October, with a "you've been booed" note. The recipient hangs a sign on their door so they aren't booed twice and then boos two more people, so it spreads as a chain.

What do you put in a boo basket?

Mostly treats, plus one or two seasonal extras: Halloween candy, hot cocoa or cider mix, Halloween socks or a small plush, a pumpkin carving kit or colouring book, all in a plastic pumpkin or a small basket. Keep it under about $20.

How much should a boo basket cost?

Usually $10–20. It is meant to be a cheap, anonymous surprise; spending much more turns it into a gift that people feel obliged to match.

What does "you've been booed" mean?

It means someone has anonymously left you a boo basket. The note asks you to hang a "we've been booed" sign on your door and pass the tradition on by booing two more households.

Is there a free "you've been booed" printable?

Yes — this page has a free one-page printable with the note for the basket and the door sign. Print it on US Letter or A4 and cut along the line.

When should you boo someone?

Any time in October, and the earlier the better if you want the chain to have time to spread before Halloween on October 31.
