LEGO Formula 1: every set, and which one to actually buy

LEGO Formula 1 is that rare piece of motorsport merch a fan actually wants. Not a cap worn twice, but a model that stays on the shelf — from a $10 mystery car to a 1,675-piece Technic flagship that takes three evenings to build.

This guide covers every LEGO F1 set on sale, sorted by who it suits rather than by how much it costs. Prices on Amazon move daily and vary by seller, so each set is given a price band and a search link that shows today's offers rather than a number that will be wrong next week.

2026 matters for this line: Audi joined the grid, a new Technic flagship landed, and the existing Speed Champions wave is in its last months. That part comes first.

The short answer

What 2026 brought

Five sets this year — and one conspicuous gap.

Cadillac also joined the grid in 2026 — and has no LEGO set at all. A complete 2026 grid cannot be built out of boxes, so treat any listing promising a "LEGO Cadillac F1 car" as either a custom build or a counterfeit.

Why this season is different

Normally "buy early" just means popular sets sell out before the holidays. This year there is a harder reason: the entire Speed Champions F1 wave — ten cars from the 2024 grid — is being retired at the end of 2026. After that they exist only on the secondary market, at secondary-market prices.

In practice: if someone is collecting the grid, this is the last year to complete it at retail. If you just want a gift, there is no need to rush — a new wave built to the 2026 rules will replace it.

The six lines, and who each is for

LEGO builds F1 cars across six ranges. They differ less in price than in purpose: some are toys that get pushed around a carpet, others are models that go on a shelf and are never touched again.

Speed Champions: the grid

The core line for fans: LEGO built the whole championship grid, one car per team, each with a driver minifigure. They are all the same scale, so they line up on a shelf — which is exactly why people collect them in sets rather than singly.

The advice that saves the most money and grief: do not guess the team. Buy the one they support, or for a collector, the one they are missing.

For children: DUPLO and City

Speed Champions is a model more than a toy — small parts and stickers that a child under eight will simply pull off. City and DUPLO are built for play: chunky cars, a pit lane and trucks that survive a carpet Grand Prix.

Helmets and legends

Sets adults build to put on a desk. Editions are large helmets on a stand in a specific driver's livery. Icons are championship cars from earlier eras, with the driver included.

Technic: the flagships

1,300–1,700 pieces, working mechanics — piston engine, steering, suspension, differential — and two feet of car. These take several evenings, which makes them an experience rather than an object.

Check two things before buying: whether there is anywhere to put it, and whether the person actually wants to spend three evenings building. A Technic box that sits unopened for a year is the saddest gift on this page.

Where to put it: wall mounts

The common problem with a large Technic car is not the price — it is that two feet of model has nowhere to live. It eats half a shelf, collects dust, and a month later it is in a cupboard. The fix most people never think of is a wall mount: the car hangs vertically like a museum exhibit and becomes the most noticeable thing in the room.

Mounts exist for both sizes — the big Technic cars and the small Speed Champions, including boards that hold the whole grid side by side. Wall mounts and display boards start around $10 for a 3D-printed bracket and run to roughly $90 for a backlit display board. The wall is expensive because of the cars, not the brackets: four large Technic sets is already about $900.

One thing to understand: these are not official LEGO products but third-party accessories, so fit and finish depend entirely on the seller. Read the reviews and look at buyer photos rather than the renders in the listing.

As a gift a mount works in two situations: paired with the set you are already giving, or on its own for someone whose Technic car is already on a shelf and who needs nothing else from LEGO.

How to get this wrong

  • The team matters more than the price. A Ferrari fan will not be pleased by a more expensive Mercedes. If you do not know who they support, check their feed — or ask them to put a wishlist together, which shows both the team and the exact set.
  • Drivers move. Hamilton has been at Ferrari since 2025, so the older Mercedes sets are no longer about him.
  • The age on the box is not decoration. 18+ on Technic and Icons means a long instruction booklet and fiddly mechanics, not simply "for grown-ups".
  • Buy the real thing. Marketplaces are full of look-alikes that photograph well and fall apart in the hand.
  • Never give a duplicate car. It is the main disappointment in any collectible line, and the one that a wishlist removes entirely: givers can see what is already taken, the owner cannot.

Frequently asked questions

How much do LEGO Formula 1 sets cost?

From under $15 for the 71049 mystery car to about $230 for the Technic McLaren MCL39. The Speed Champions cars that most people buy sit at $25–30. Amazon pricing moves daily and varies by seller.

Which LEGO F1 set should I buy for a child?

Ages 2–5: DUPLO 10445. Ages 6–9: City 60442 or 60464. From 10 up, any Speed Champions car in their team. The large City truck 60445 suits eight and over.

What LEGO F1 sets came out in 2026?

Five. Speed Champions Audi R26 (77259), Technic McLaren MCL39 (42228), Icons Ferrari F2004 with Michael Schumacher (11375) and the City truck with the Audi car (60493) all arrived on 1 March; Technic Aston Martin AMR25 (42240) followed on 1 July.

Is there a LEGO Cadillac F1 car?

No. Cadillac joined Formula 1 in 2026 but has no LEGO set, so a complete 2026 grid cannot be assembled from official boxes.

What is the biggest LEGO Formula 1 set?

Technic McLaren MCL39 at 1,675 pieces and 24 inches long, followed by the Mercedes W14 (1,642) and Red Bull RB20 (1,639). The largest City set is the 60445 truck at 1,086 pieces.

Are the Speed Champions F1 cars being discontinued?

Yes. The ten-car wave based on the 2024 grid is retiring at the end of 2026. If someone is completing the set, this is the last year to do it at retail prices.
