Christmas Eve Box Ideas: What to Put in One (2026)
A Christmas Eve box is a box of small gifts that someone opens on 24 December, the night before Christmas Day. In 2026 that is Thursday, 24 December. The classic contents are pyjamas, a film, hot chocolate and a bedtime book, so the box turns the evening into a cosy start to Christmas instead of one more present to tear open.
It is mostly made for children, but plenty of people now fill one for a partner, a teenager or the whole family. Below: what goes in, when to open it, 25 filler ideas grouped by who they are for, cheap options under $5 / £5 and $10 / £10, and wooden box against shoebox. Prices are given in dollars and pounds, so the guide works the same in the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada and Australia.

What a Christmas Eve box is, and where it came from
The box is a gift you open the night before Christmas, usually in the evening. Most families put in something to wear to bed (new pyjamas are the number one item), something to watch, something warm to drink and something to read. Marks & Spencer describes it as a box filled for the recipient to open on Christmas Eve, mainly for children from their parents, though anyone can give or get one.
How old is the custom? Newer than most people assume, and the sources do not give a date. M&S calls it a relatively new festive tradition in the UK and links it to the German habit of exchanging presents on 24 December. A regional UK paper calls it one of our newest Christmas traditions and notes that it was already being debated on TV in 2018. We could not find any source that names a first year, or one that dates it separately in Ireland, so be wary of anyone who gives you a precise origin story.
Do not confuse it with the older British and Irish Christmas box, the tip or small gift given to tradespeople and workers, which is where Boxing Day gets its name. Same word, different custom. For every other winter gift night, see our winter gifting calendar.
Reading from the US, Canada or Australia? The custom is British and Irish at heart and newer where you are, but it works the same way: one box, opened on the evening of Thursday, 24 December 2026, with pyjamas, a film, hot chocolate and a book. Everything in it is easy to find locally. Target and Walmart are the usual US places for matching pyjamas (Americans say pajamas) and hot cocoa.

When to open a Christmas Eve box
Thursday, 24 December 2026, and late in the day. M&S suggests opening it towards the end of the evening so the pyjamas and the soft toy double as the signal to get ready for bed. Open it after tea and before the film, and the whole box becomes the bedtime routine: pyjamas on, hot chocolate made, film on, book at bedtime.
Christmas Day itself is Friday, 25 December, so there is a full night between the box and the main presents. Some families open it at lunchtime on the 24th instead, if there is a long drive or a visit to grandparents in the evening. Whichever you choose, tell the children the rule in advance: the box is for tonight, the stocking is for the morning.
Fill the box in the first week of December and buy the pyjamas by 10 December. Sizes in festive nightwear sell out unevenly, and the box is the one present that cannot be swapped on the 26th.
Pick the box first: wooden or shoebox
A personalised wooden box is a gift in itself and comes out again every year, which is the main argument for it. A shoebox or a gift bag works just as well, and the cost of a bought box is not the point of the tradition. One UK article notes that cardboard boxes can cost as little as a couple of pounds, while personalised wooden ones are the pricier, reusable option.
On Amazon, personalised wooden boxes with the child's name engraved or printed on the lid start at about $20 / £16 (the tag line is usually from Santa or the North Pole). Personalised ones take time to make and cannot be returned, so order early. Our Amazon search for wooden Christmas Eve boxes opens in your own country's store.
Personalised wooden box — about $24 / £19
Engraved pine crate — about $56 / £45
Walmart Holiday Time box — $6.72 (6 Nov 2026)
Buy the box for the family, not the child. A bigger chest still works when there are two or three children in the house, or a partner joins in. Use a shoebox for the first year if you are not sure the tradition will stick.
Children's Christmas Eve box ideas, by age
For a children's Christmas Eve box the rule is one wearable, one watchable, one edible, one to keep. The wearable goes first because it is also the dress code for the evening.
Babies and toddlers (0 to 3)
- A Christmas sleepsuit or festive pyjamas in the next size up, so they still fit in January
- A comforter or a first soft toy, for example the Spencer Bear soft toy at M&S (UK only), £16
- A board book about bedtime or Santa, and a keepsake decoration for the tree with their name and the year on it
Ages 4 to 7
- Pyjamas with a character or a Christmas print, the item every guide agrees on. In the UK, the Spencer Bear pyjama set at M&S is from £16; elsewhere, search kids' Christmas pyjamas on Amazon (about $20 / £16 a set)
- Santa slippers, or fluffy socks if slippers are already on the Christmas list
- A picture book to read tonight and a colouring book with new pens
- A magic key for the front door or reindeer food for the garden, the cheap props that make the night feel real
Ages 8 to 12
UK only: M&S Spencer Bear pyjamas — from £16 (6 Nov 2026)
UK only: M&S Spencer Bear soft toy — £16 (6 Nov 2026)
- A new board game or card game for the whole house to play on Christmas Eve
- A jigsaw or a craft kit, for the quiet hours between Christmas morning and lunch
- A film they have not seen, on DVD or a streaming gift card, plus popcorn to go with it
- A new tree decoration, one per year, so the box turns into a collection by the time they are grown
Christmas Eve box for teens
Teenagers still want the box, they just do not want the Santa slippers. Skip the novelty and go for things they would actually use that evening.
- Matching pyjamas, in a plain stripe or check rather than a cartoon print
- A sheet mask or a satin eye mask, about $8 / £6
- Nail varnish, a lip balm or a scrunchie set in the colours they already wear
- A bar of their favourite chocolate and a mug of the good hot chocolate
- A phone-free evening pass: a card game, a puzzle, a film chosen by them
For a teen, add a voucher for the one thing on their list and write the amount on the card. The box is for the evening; the list is for the morning.
Christmas Eve box for adults and couples
A Christmas Eve box for adults is the same format minus the cartoon print: one cosy thing to wear, one thing to watch, one drink, one treat. For a partner it is a good use of an hour in the second week of December, and it works especially well for a first Christmas together or a couple who live apart.
- Pyjamas or a robe in a good fabric, the gift that makes the whole box feel generous
- Fluffy or knitted bedsocks, because everyone owns one holey pair
- A film to watch together, a bottle of something good and the snacks to go with it
- A paperback they have been meaning to read, with a reading light or bookmark
- A candle, a bath bomb or a face mask for an evening in, with a handwritten note about why you picked it
Short of ideas for a partner? Ask them for three items from their own wishlist. Fill the box from it and you will not repeat anything they already own.
A box for the whole family
One shared box for everyone is the cheapest version and the one that works best in a mixed-age household. Nobody argues about whose is bigger, and it becomes a family ritual in a way that three separate boxes do not.
- A board game or card game the whole family can play, from age seven to grandparents
- A Christmas film for everyone, and one blanket per sofa
- Hot chocolate for the kitchen: spoons, melts or sachets, and plenty of marshmallows
- A new decoration for the tree, one per family, with the year on it
- A family Christmas list so grandparents and aunts fill the box without doubling up. Make one on our family wishlist and send the link to everyone who might add to the box
Grandparents love to contribute to a Christmas Eve box and hate to repeat each other. Put the box on a shared list so each person can claim a line, and nobody buys a fourth pair of festive socks.
Cheap fillers: under $5 / £5 and under $10 / £10
The tradition does not need a big budget. One UK article puts it plainly: the box can hold anything that fits your budget, and a few pounds is enough. Amazon prices below are rounded figures read on amazon.com on 6 November 2026, with the pound price as a rough conversion, so check the current price in your own store before you order.
Hot cocoa sachets, 30 — about $6 / £5
Cocoa spoons, 3 — about $10 / £8
Hot chocolate bombs, 4 — about $15 / £12
- Under $5 / £5: a hot chocolate sachet, a candy cane and a chocolate Santa. Hot cocoa mix with marshmallows comes in multipacks that cost about $6 / £5 for 30 sachets
- Under $5 / £5: popcorn for the film, a mince pie or a packet of cookies (biscuits in the UK)
- Under $5 / £5: a magic key, a bag of reindeer food, a card from Santa
- Under $10 / £10: chocolate hot cocoa spoons, a pack of three for about $10 / £8
- Under $10 / £10: a bedtime book from a charity shop or thrift store, or last year's Christmas picture book
- Under $10 / £10: a satin eye mask or a pair of festive socks
A wooden box does not have to come from a gift shop. Amazon sellers list engraved pine crates for about $56 / £45, personalised keepsake boxes from about $20 / £16, and a plain crate costs less if you decorate it yourself.
What not to put in a Christmas Eve box
- The big present. Anything that belongs under the tree on the morning stays there, or the morning has nothing to open
- Clothes in a size you have to guess, other than pyjamas, which a child will grow into anyway
- A toy with a noisy battery pack, on a night when the whole house needs to go to sleep
- Too much sugar. One chocolate and one drink is a treat, five is a 2 a.m. wake-up
- Anything that melts, leaks or has to stay in the fridge
- Two identical boxes in different colours for siblings. They will compare, and one will lose
How to fill it without overspending
Decide the total first. Most families spend somewhere between $15 / £10 and $50 / £40 per box on the fillers, plus the box itself if they buy one. Spend the biggest share on the pyjamas, which everyone wears that night, and keep everything else under $10 / £10.
If you are also filling a stocking, the two overlap: see our stocking stuffer ideas for the small things that fit either. If you are still working out what the family wants, our Christmas list ideas have a template, and an advent calendar covers the 24 days before.
In Ireland and Australia the office or family name draw is called Kris Kringle, and we cover it in our Kris Kringle guide. A Christmas Eve box fits inside one too: draw names and give the person you drew the pyjamas, the film and a mug of hot chocolate.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Christmas Eve box?
A box of small gifts opened on 24 December, usually in the evening. The classic contents are pyjamas (pajamas in the US), a film, hot chocolate and a bedtime book. The custom is British and Irish at heart and newer in the US, Canada and Australia, where it works the same way. It is mostly made for children, but anyone can give or get one. In 2026, Christmas Eve is Thursday, 24 December.
What do you put in a Christmas Eve box?
New pyjamas first, then something to watch (a film or a DVD), something warm to drink (hot chocolate), something to read and a small treat. Slippers, fluffy socks, a soft toy, a board game and a new tree decoration are the usual extras.
When do you open a Christmas Eve box?
On the evening of 24 December, after tea and before bed. Opening it late means the pyjamas and the film become the bedtime routine. Some families open it at lunchtime if they are travelling in the evening.
How old is the Christmas Eve box tradition?
It is recent. M&S calls it a relatively new tradition in the UK and links it to the German custom of giving presents on 24 December, but no source we found names a first year or an exact origin.
What is a good Christmas Eve box for adults?
The same format with grown-up contents: good pyjamas or a robe, bedsocks, a film and a drink to share, a paperback and a candle or bath bomb. For a partner it works well as a cosy evening in.
How much should a Christmas Eve box cost?
Anything that fits your budget. A box can be a shoebox with a few dollars or pounds of treats, or a personalised wooden box with pyjamas and a toy. Many families spend $15 / £10 to $50 / £40 on the fillers, with the pyjamas as the biggest item.
