Kris Kringle 2026: How the Draw Works, Budgets and Gift Ideas

Kris Kringle is what Australians (and plenty of New Zealanders) call Secret Santa: everyone in the group draws one name in secret and buys one present for that person, within a budget agreed up front. In Ireland the same game is called Kris Kindle.

The rules are identical whatever you call it, so the hard part is never the rules. It is the draw (nobody wants to pull names out of a hat over Teams), the budget, and finding a gift for someone you know mainly from the kitchen. This guide covers all three.

Run the draw in a minute: one link, everyone joins from their phone. Free, no signup.

Prefer to run it in Telegram? The whole exchange now works inside our Telegram bot — create the group, send the invite, draw names and see who you got, without leaving the chat. Here is how it works. Rather use the browser? The Secret Santa generator does the same in a minute, with no signup.

Why it's called Kris Kringle

The name comes from German Christkindl, the Christ Child who brings presents in parts of Germany and Austria. German-speaking settlers took the custom to Pennsylvania in the 1700s, and in English mouths Christkindl became Kriss Kringle. By the 1840s Americans were using it as another name for Santa Claus, which is why the judge in Miracle on 34th Street has to rule on whether Kris Kringle is real.

In Australia the name moved one step further: it stopped meaning the gift-giver and started meaning the draw. "Are you doing Kris Kringle this year?" means the office or family exchange, not the man in red. Ireland kept a spelling closer to the German, Kris Kindle, for exactly the same game.

How to run a Kris Kringle draw online

The hat works when everyone is in one room and nobody draws themselves. For a team split across offices, a family across three states or a group chat, an online draw is quicker and keeps the secret better. With the Kris Kringle generator on secret.gift it takes about a minute and nobody needs an account:

  1. Create the group: name, budget, date of the exchange. Pick the Secret Santa style; the mechanics are the same as Kris Kringle.
  2. Add people or share one link. Everyone joins themselves, so you do not need anyone's email.
  3. Draw. Each person sees only their own match. The organiser does not see the pairs either, so they can play too.
  4. Ask for wishlists. Everyone can add a few ideas, and their Kris Kringle reads them anonymously. The Secret Santa questionnaire works just as well for a Kris Kringle if your group prefers questions to lists.

When to do it in 2026

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, so for most offices the last full week before the break is Monday 14 – Friday 18 December, and that is when most work parties and exchanges land. Work backwards from your party date:

WhenWhat
3–4 weeks beforeAgree the budget and date, send the invite link
2–3 weeks beforeRun the draw, ask everyone to fill in a wishlist
1 week beforeLast call for online orders; check delivery to your state
On the dayExchange, guess who had whom, then reveal

For a party in the week of 14 December, that means the draw by about Friday 27 November. Family Kris Kringles usually run to Christmas Day itself, so they can draw a week or two later.

How much to spend: the $20 question

$20 is still the default office budget in Australia, and most groups land somewhere between $10 and $30. Some workplaces have moved to $30 because $20 no longer stretches as far. Families and close friends often go to $30–50. Whatever the number, two rules matter more than the amount:

  • Set a cap, not a target. "Up to $20" stops one person turning up with a $60 bottle and making everyone else feel cheap.
  • Make it opt-in at work. Not everyone can or wants to spend on colleagues in December; an easy way out keeps the whole thing fun.

In Ireland the usual office Kris Kindle budget is around €10–20. The ideas below translate one-to-one: read the dollar tiers as euro, and most of the same items are on Amazon UK, which ships to Ireland.

Small, consumable and hard to get wrong:

Kris Kringle gift ideas around $20

The classic office tier. Aim for something they will use this summer:

  • A sand-free beach towel or a cooling towel — useful from Boxing Day on
  • An insulated drink bottle or keep-cup
  • A paperback from their favourite genre, or a book voucher
  • A desk plant in a nice pot (succulents survive anything)
  • A small board or card game — Exploding Kittens, Uno Flip, Sushi Go
  • Sunscreen in a good formula plus a cap — practical, never re-gifted
  • A gourmet hamper-in-miniature: a nice olive oil, crackers and a chutney

For family and close friends, where you know a bit more about the person:

  • A picnic set or a cooler bag for the summer holidays
  • A candle or diffuser from a local maker
  • A cookbook for the person who brings the best potluck dish
  • Bluetooth earbuds or a mini speaker in the budget range
  • An experience voucher: a movie double pass, a cooking class, a car wash
  • A good bottle of wine or local craft beer — only if you know they drink
  • A jigsaw puzzle or LEGO set for the adult who still likes building things

Stuck on someone you barely know? Gift around their day: the desk they sit at, the commute, the lunch break. Upgrading a daily annoyance beats decorating a shelf. More by price in our Secret Santa gift ideas by budget.

What not to buy

  • Joke gifts with an edge — anything about weight, age or being single goes down badly at work
  • Alcohol by default — not everyone drinks, and the office party is the wrong place to find out
  • Scented skincare for someone you do not know — scent is personal
  • Christmas decorations — they are out of date on 26 December

Frequently asked questions

Is Kris Kringle the same as Secret Santa?

Yes. Kris Kringle is the usual Australian name for a Secret Santa exchange: everyone draws one name in secret and buys a gift for that person within an agreed budget. In Ireland the same game is called Kris Kindle.

Why do Australians say Kris Kringle?

The name comes from the German Christkindl, the Christ Child who brings presents, which became Kriss Kringle among English speakers in 19th-century Pennsylvania and then another name for Santa Claus. In Australia it came to mean the gift draw itself rather than the gift-giver.

How much should you spend on a Kris Kringle?

$20 is the most common office budget in Australia, with most groups between $10 and $30. Families and friends often choose $30 to $50. Agree a cap rather than a target so nobody overspends.

How do you do a Kris Kringle draw online?

Create a group with a free generator such as secret.gift, share the invite link, add any exclusions, and run the draw. Each person sees only who they got, and everyone can leave a wishlist for their Kris Kringle. No account or email is needed.

When should you draw names for an office Kris Kringle in 2026?

Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, so most office parties fall in the week of 14 December. Draw names two to three weeks before the party, around late November, so people have time to order online.
